It’s wild how much body language and energy shape someone’s performance, even on radio. For me, talking with my hands has never been an issue (must be my European heritage!), but so many clients start off reserved. I’ll be standing there saying, “Bigger! Bigger!”—and they think they’re overdoing it… until we play it back. The moment they start using their body and adding energy, they sound more confident, credible, and engaging.
For some people its as subtle as a few hand gestures, for others it’s more.
And don’t even get me started on the importance of tone!
There are all sorts of stats about how body language influences perception. I won’t pretend to know which ones are true, but after years of coaching people on media performance, I know it makes a massive difference.
To practice these skills and find the right balance of energy, body language, and tone, media training should be as realistic as possible. For traditional media skills, we simulate live radio studios, TV interviews, press conferences, live crosses. But great media training also covers public speaking, how to present to live audiences and show up on camera for your stakeholders.
If you are a leader you need to know how to engage your audience.
Because if you don’t bring the energy, you’re boring to watch or listen to. (Yes, my sessions are very honest.)
