Presenting to the Board:Why It’s Different (and How to Do It Well)

Search for presentation tips and you’ll get the same advice every time. “Move around the stage.” “Tell lots of stories.” “Get the audience involved.” All great advice. Unless you’re presenting to a board.

I’ve coached plenty of executives preparing for board meetings, and the reality is you’re probably sitting down, there are six to twelve very busy people around a table. They’ve already read the board papers (or at least they were supposed to), and want you to explain why they should agree with whatever you’re proposing..

They are far more interested in asking questions than listening to a polished presentation. So yes, presenting to a board is different.

But that doesn’t mean audience engagement goes out the window. It just looks different.

The goal isn’t to entertain. It’s to be clear, persuasive, authoritative and trustworthy. Board members are processing information, weighing risk, thinking strategically and often preparing their next question while you’re talking. If your message isn’t clear, they’ll mentally move on before you’ve finished your sentence.

So, you still need to engage your audience. But not in a ‘conference keynote’ kind of way.

Start with the point, be clear about why it matters and what you’ll be asking them for.

Use the power of the pause (hands down my favourite comms technique because we can all do it!). Short sentences, pauses, one idea at a time. It demonstrates confidence.

Be ready for the questions. Include them in your presentation so that you answer them on your own terms.

Remember why you’re there. Boards aren’t looking for perfection. They’re looking for confidence, clarity and judgement. They want someone who can explain a complex issue simply, answer questions thoughtfully and help them make a decision.

    Why train with ThinkBox?

At ThinkBox Media we believe in Strategic Customised Training. This means your training will be developed specifically for you; your industry, your concerns, your real scenarios.
A mining executive is not likely to face the exact same issues as a doctor, a government minister or a not-for-profit organisation. One Size fits all trainings do not work.

Some people need a lot of time to improve their performance, others get stuck on the messaging. Many bigger companies already have some bases covered by their own comms teams freeing up more time to focus on the practical skills.

Often a one-on-one training in required, other times small or larger groups may provide a more cost effective option for a team.
We know you’re results driven and so are we!
