Some of the smartest, most capable people I’ve worked with get nervous when it’s time to speak in front of others. Why? Because they care. They want to get it right.
Being intelligent or good at your job, doesn’t automatically make you a confident presenter. In some cases leaders are the ones most aware of all the ways a presentation could go wrong. They overthink it. They strive for perfection. And they forget one key thing: It’s not about you. It’s about them.
Your presentation isn’t a performance, it’s a connection. It’s a chance to offer value, to share your perspective, to help your audience learn, decide, or take action. And once you shift the focus from yourself to them, everything gets a little easier.
My Tips:
1. Be authentic, not perfect
Flawless presenters are forgettable. Authentic ones are memorable. Your audience trust you when you speak like a human, share stories, admit challenges, and use your own words. You’re not there to win an Oscar. You’re there to connect.
2. Lean into your unique perspective
You don’t have to be the loudest voice in the room. You just need to be your voice. Whether you’re leading a boardroom, presenting at a conference, or updating your team, your lived experience and insight are what set you apart. People are hungry for real, grounded perspectives.
3. Practice
Even the most confident speakers have had coaching. Media professionals, CEOs, TED Talkers – they all rehearse and refine through presentation training. Training gives you techniques that work under pressure, and helps you make the most of your natural strengths. Arm yourself with a few tools to bring out your best.
4. Remember: it’s not about you
Most of the nerves come from over-focusing on ourselves. How do I look? What if I forget something? What if I sound stupid? The moment you flip the switch and focus on your audience and what they need or care about – you stop performing and start communicating.
If you’re nervous about public speaking, it doesn’t mean you’re not good at it. It means you care about doing it well. And that’s a great place to start.

Why train with ThinkBox?
At ThinkBox Media we believe in Strategic Customised Training. This means your training will be developed specifically for you; your industry, your concerns, your real scenarios.
A mining executive is not likely to face the exact same issues as a doctor, a government minister or a not-for-profit organisation. One Size fits all trainings do not work.
Some people need a lot of time to improve their performance, others get stuck on the messaging. Many bigger companies already have some bases covered by their own comms teams freeing up more time to focus on the practical skills.
Often a one-on-one training in required, other times small or larger groups may provide a more cost effective option for a team.
We know you’re results driven and so are we!
Not sure what you need? We can help you.
We have been asked a lot of questions. Many of them about where to start. So we have created a comprehensive FAQ's section to help you navigate the journey.
